Behind Prison Walls

The Beginning . . .
Back in 2003 little did I know that when I attended my first prison training/orientation session that moment in time would be a very pivotal turning point in my life.
As a child I’ve always had the desire to help others. At the tender age of four my heart was set on becoming a nurse. No other profession interested me. Later on in life, through reflection I realized that I did not fully comprehend the magnitude of this hunger—God placed deep within my heart, the thirst to help the sick get well.
As I digress for a few moments I’m reminded of the countless acts of kindness God displayed through my service unto Him as my passion intensely grew to care for others with different various needs. Everything I found myself committed to doing just seemed to flow naturally out of me and today these endeavors remain unchanged. I know it’s solely because of God’s Gift of Grace operating in and through me.
Moving Forward . . .
As a young adult I enrolled into a medical program and graduated as a certified physician’s assistant and worked in homes, medical offices, and clinics. Gazing back upon the path I chose to take it is evident that God had something else in mind for me as it relates to the field of nursing. In hindsight God had plans for me to attend His—University and become “His” assistant, giving aid to people that are afflicted; individuals suffering in one way or another from the ABC’s of Life. God originated a strategic plan for my life. As I tapped into His will for me He began to order my steps—deliberately allowing my path to cross and connect with men, women, boys and girls from all walks of life.
These wounded people that I would encounter along the way would not only be physically challenged but also spiritually impaired. Some suffering from mental exhaustion, others emotional trauma due to being abused, broken, confused, despondent, hurting, rejected, suicidal; the list is inexhaustible, the vicissitudes, the ABC’s of Life.
When your heart seeks to do the Will of God and His Will alone—you just go wherever He leads you. God is everywhere! And He loves everyone! His nature is benevolent and He authentically desires eternal happiness (salvation) for us all. It does not matter where we reside; everyone will face God’s judgment. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness: but is long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 (KJV)
Behind Prison Walls . . .
I have seen God at work within the hearts and minds of the incarcerated men and women that I’ve had the privilege of ministering to during my journey “behind prison walls.” To physically see the life—changing effect in motion is indescribably—breathtaking, and at times so overwhelming. Through the miracles that Christ has wrought, I have witnessed the evidence of the Holy Spirit working in and through cold—callous hearts, skillfully chiseling away at the hard exteriors that once denied Him access.
What you don’t know can hurt you! While sharing biblical kingdom keys these men and women have come to accept god’s forgiveness and have chosen to forgive themselves and others. They have received understanding and revelation from the Bible and now are able to apply the wisdom and knowledge they have obtained to everyday living.
These biblical kingdom keys are indispensable. They unlock different compartments within the chambers of the heart, allowing God, to do a work in the individual that is worthy of His name.
To watch these dying souls find life in Christ and become pliable in the hands of loving our Father is so amazing. It’s captivating to watch a surrendered vessel as God peels back the layers highlighting the issue(s) that have been a hindrance to their spiritual growth and maturity.
I’ve seen the removal of masks as His—Light overshadowed the dark places that were holding these loving souls’ hostage through the bondage of sin and death. Hallelujah, Glory to God, what once entangled them had no choice but to let them go in Jesus name!
Walls that were put up to keep Christ and His elect out fell as the Love of Christ consumed their hearts, making way for a new foundation to be built to replace torn down barriers that prevented complete healing, wholeness and total restoration from taking place within the heart of the believer. Men and women stopped running and accepted their call into the ministry. And for some sentences were reduced resulting in early release.
Behind Prison Walls these men and women became susceptive to surrendering their old lifestyle to God in exchange for a new life in Him and all He has to offer. Through the acceptance of God’s unconditional love and forgiveness lives are being changed and empowered forever.
Little did I know that even though there would be countless individuals I’d encounter in the free world, there would also be a percentage that God would send me to who reside behind prisons walls. Although they are currently isolated from society, it is still God’s desire for them to live—life—free. “So if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8:36 (KJV)
We need more laborers harvesting souls! “He said to his disciples, “A large crop is in the fields, but there are only few workers.” Matthew 9:37 (CEV)
“So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things and you will never fall away.” 2 Peter 1:10 (NLT)
Is God calling you?
Will you go?
